Pre-school Curriculum

Daily Classroom Activity Schedule

8:00 – 8:20 AM

MORNING GREETING: Morning health checks by teacher. Morning activities include: table puzzles, pegs and peg boards, flash cards, lacing, memory games, creative drawing, and library corner.


8:20 – 8:50 AM

BREAKFAST: Children and teachers engage in conversation while eating breakfast. Children serve themselves. All areas are open.

8:50 – 9:00 AM

PLANNING TIME: Children meet teacher on the rug to plan the day’s activities and each child chooses the interest area where he/she wants to work/play. Adult(s) help children think through their plans and elaborate on their ideas. They  also record the plans and help them get started.  All areas are open.


9:00 – 10:00 AM

WORK/PLAY PERIOD: Opportunities for child-initiated work/play in interest areas. Children may work individually or in small groups. Children move freely from one area to another.  Interest areas include art, block, computer, housekeeping, library/listening, sand, water, woodworking, music, discovery, manipulative (table toys). Teachers and paraprofessionals circulate around the room, talking to and assisting the children.


TRANSITION:

Clean-up (teachers assist with cleaning up).


10:00 – 10:10 AM

STORY TIME/REVIEW: The children who have cleaned up meet the teacher on the rug for story time. Children then meet informally to review the morning’s (work period) activities.  Each child gets a chance to tell or show the group what he/she did. The adults encourage expressive language.


10:10 – 10:40 AM

SMALL GROUP TIME: Class is divided into small groups for teacher-initiated activities, such as language arts, science, nutrition/cooking, art, math, manipulative, etc.


10:40 – 11:25 AM

ACTIVE PLAY (INDOOR OR OUTDOOR): Large muscle development (balls, ropes, bikes, etc.)  Use of equipment, group games and/or music, movement, creative, dramatics (indoor or outdoor). Movement to music, dance, rhythm band, circle activities.


11:25 – 11:40 AM

CIRCLE TIME: Children actively participate in games, songs, finger play, music and movement experiences and creative dramatics.

 PREPARTION FOR LUNCH – Informal Conversation


11:40 – 12:30 PM

LUNCH TIME: The teachers and children engage in conversation about the importance of nutrition.  They discuss food color and texture. Children are encouraged to taste all foods.

12:30 – 12:45 PM

PREPARATION FOR REST TIME: Using the bathroom, washing hands, putting down cots.


12:45 – 2:00 PM

REST PERIOD


2:00 –2:15 PM

PREPARATION: Putting away cots, folding sheets and blankets, putting on shoes, toileting.


2:15 – 2: 45 PM

STORY TIME: Teachers read to children or children listen to tapes and/or audio 


2:45 – 3:00 PM

PREPARATION FOR P.M. SUPPER


3:00 – 3:30 PM

P.M. SUPPER: Supper is served.  Teachers talk about food being served.  Children serve themselves.

3:30 – 4:30 PM

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES: If weather permits, children exercise gross motor skills by running, jumping, ball playing, jumping rope, riding tricycles, etc. Comparable indoor exercise occurs on rainy days.


4:30 – 5:00 PM

INDOOR ACTIVITIES: A follow up of morning activities.  Small group gathering, children and teachers participate in arts and crafts and/or special 


5:00 – 5:30 PM

CREATIVE PLAY: Quiet activities, soft music or the children play in the manipulative games areas.


5:30 – 6:00 PM

Teachers prepare for the next day.

REMINDER: The Department of Health requires that all children must present proof of having received a seasonal flu shot no later than December 31st, 2024
