Tanya McDougal is the Educational Director at our Friends of Crown Heights Center located at 141 East 40th Street in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn, where she oversees the delivery of high‑quality Early Childhood Education for preschoolers ages 2 -5 years old. With nearly three decades of continuous experience and expertise in the field, she brings to her work a deep commitment to educational excellence, community partnership and the holistic development of young children in her care.
A proud product of New York City’s Head Start programs, Ms. McDougal understands firsthand the transformative impact of nurturing early learning environments. This foundation has inspired her lifelong dedication to ensuring that all children and families receive the support, stability and opportunities they deserve.
Ms. McDougal holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Medgar Evers College of the City University of New York (CUNY), and the Master of Science degree in Early Childhood and Special Education from Touro College. Her professional experience has encompassed a wide range of roles, including Afterschool Group Teacher, Pre‑K and Kindergarten Teacher, Preschool Lead Teacher, New York City Department of Education Substitute Teacher, and Early Childhood Education Consultant for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Ms. McDougal also holds the New York State Permanent Teacher Certification for Pre‑K, Kindergarten, and Grades 1-6.
Her educational philosophy is grounded in honoring the whole child by supporting their cognitive, social‑emotional, and physical development, fostering strong and collaborative relationships with families, and cultivating safe, enriching environments in which children can thrive. Ms. McDougal views Early Childhood Educational Centers as vital community hubs — nurturing spaces that strengthen families, build connections, and support the wellbeing of the communities they serve.
Outside of her professional work, Ms. McDougal enjoys painting, drawing, and exploring science fiction through books, film and television — interests that reflect her belief in creativity, imagination and the limitless potential of every child.
