Educational Director - 49 Avenue W

Claribel Sanchez

A dedicated educator with more than 30 years of continuous professional experience, Claribel Sanchez is passionate about nurturing young minds and fostering inclusive learning environments in which every child is able to thrive.

Ms. Sanchez’s journey began in the New York City Public School System where she has held a number of progressively responsible pedagogical roles, culminating in her recent appointment as Educational Director at our Friends of Crown Heights Educational Center #6 in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. Her extensive experience has provided her with a deep understanding of the educational system, child development, and the diverse needs of students, particularly those facing learning challenges. As a licensed Applied Behavioral therapist, she has further honed her skills in supporting students on the autism spectrum and those with special needs. This experience has enriched her understanding of individualized learning approaches and broadened her ability to create inclusive classrooms where all students succeed.

At Friends of Crown Heights, Ms. Sanchez has cultivated an inclusive atmosphere where every child feels valued and respected. Her commitment to inclusivity stems from her own experiences as a first-generation College student and English Language Learner. This dedication is evident in the innovative programs and comprehensive support services that she has implemented at our Avenue W Center. These innovations have consistently garnered high praise from parents and families, as well as NYC Department of Education program evaluators.

Ms. Sanchez’s expertise and leadership are grounded in a strong academic foundation, including a Master of Science in Special Education from Touro College, and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Long Island University. Her diverse roles within and outside the classroom have equipped her with the hands-on experience needed to effectively support students, parents, staff and other team members in her program.

Throughout her career, Ms. Sanchez’s commitment to empowering children and youth has extended beyond the classroom. Deeply involved with the Fiver Children’s Foundation for 20+ years, she has witnessed its transformative impact firsthand. (Fiver is a youth development organization that provides underserved children with a 10-year development program of summer camps and year-round support, empowering them to succeed in all aspects of their lives.) Her four children have all completed the Fiver program, with one sitting on Fiver’s board of directors. Inspired by their success, Ms. Sanchez actively volunteers with Fiver and founded four college scholarships at their annual benefit last year to provide financial assistance to high school students.

Ms. Claribel Sanchez is an exceptional leader in early childhood education. Her passion, experience, and unwavering commitment to inclusivity make her a true inspiration and a driving force in shaping young lives and building a brighter future for her community.
